Overview of C language


HISTORY
  1. C is a general-purpose, high-level language that was originally developed by Dennis M. Ritchie to develop the UNIX operating system at Bell Labs. C was originally first implemented on the DEC PDP-11 computer in 1972.
  2. In 1978, Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie produced the first publicly available description of C, now known as the K&R standard.
  3. The UNIX operating system, the C compiler, and essentially all UNIX application programs have been written in C. C has now become a widely used professional language for various reasons −
  • Easy to learn
  • Structured language
  • It produces efficient programs
  • It can handle low-level activities
  • It can be compiled on a variety of computer platforms 
  "C is task oriented high level programming language"



  1. C is the high level and low level programming language so, it is also known as mid or middle level language.
  2. Its main objective is to develop system software as OS, Compiler, Interpreter, Linker, Loader, and other utilities software as data base drivers and network drivers .
  3. It is also used to develop application software as school management system, super-market etc.
  4. It was derived from BCPL(Basic Combined Programming Language) and B-language.
  5. It is said to be Mother language of other language.
